You have a FORD Mustang 1964-1966 with a charge/discharge meter, and it is busted?
First let's look at the most probable reason.
The yellow wire of the gauge should be connected to the + of the alternator. The red wire of the gauge should be connected to the start relays, on the contact: side -> + battery. If (accidentally) the red wire gets connected on he start relays, on the contact: side -> start motor, then that's it. The start motor has a very low resistance, and a very large current will try to flow through the pour little meter . . . witch results in, a small smoke signal and the premature end of your meter.
See schematic.
Other possibility: The wire between the battery and the alternator gets disconnected => another smoke signal.
There are two ways to fix your problem . . .
-1- Buy a new gauge.(expensive)
-2- Fix it.(cheap)
The fix:
-1- Remove dashboard
-2- Open dashboard
-3- Remove Gauge
- This will take you app. 1hour . . . and some skin
- The little guy can be partly disassembled.(careful)
